Leanda De Lisle speaking on her book “The Sisters
Who Would Be Queen-the tragedy of Mary, Katherine and Lady Jane Grey”

One of the things this book highlights is how much of a curse royal blood was for women in
the Tudor days. After the death of Edward VI, with nothing but female claimants, it was a
dangerous time for women like the Grey sisters. Jane was executed for claiming the
throne, arguably rightfully under the terms of Parliament and Henry VIII's will, which had
excluded both Mary and Elizabeth on grounds of illegitimacy. Her sisters were both
imprisoned for much of their lives for daring to marry for love without the Queen's
knowledge and against her wishes, for the danger of them producing a son and heir for the
throne was too much for Elizabeth

Friday June 1 2012 7.30pm

Mathew Lyons speaking on his book “The Favourite:
Ambition, Politics and Love -Sir Walter Raleigh in Elizabeth I's Court”

The Favourite is a fascinating and beautifully written account of the relationship between
Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth I. The story may seem familiar with cloaks on
puddles etc but what Mathew Lyons gives the reader is not just a well-wrought retelling but
the machinations of Elizabeth's court, the plots, the characters, political and social context.
Raleigh emerges as a complex man but Lyons makes him come alive through meticulous
research and a real eye for what makes people tick. Reading Mathew's book felt like being
guided through the murky and highly dangerous Elizabethan court by an eloquent and
erudite insider. Brilliant debut biography.

Wednesday 5th September 2012 7.30pm

Linda Porter speaking on her book “
Katherine the Queen: The Remarkable Life of Katherine Parr”

Katherine Parr is really an interesting figure - a woman who was ahead of her Tudor time.
She was highly intelligent, well educated and well read - and she survived her oft married
husband -Henry VIII.
The book covers : Her early life, Her two previous marriages, How she made her way into
Court life and how Henry decided to make her his sixth wife- Her relationship with Henry's
three children and her own step-daughter from her second marriage. How she narrowly
missed being another statistic for murdered Queens of England. Her life after Henry's
death. Her death giving birth to her longed-for child.
