Looking through the censuses and directories (keep checking back on the Community Archives link as more records go up!), there are a number of reoccuring family names whose histories stretch back into the early 1800s. Families such as the Cowlishaws, the Barnes, the Bramells and the Nixons have a geneological link to the Manor Castle area which, through the careful preservation of documents, photographs and memories we are developing into a series of archival pages. The individual and collective histories - as many of the family members grew up together, worked together and even married one another - are a great source of historical help to us as they help expand and illustrate the reality of "everyday life" on Manor farm, in the cottages and the Nunnery Colliery for Manor
residents.
The material also tells us about wider historical themes - coal mining in Yorkshire, the role of women and children in working communities, the expansion of the local area geographically and demographically. The images in particular will also be of use as we construct our future project on the Manor Lodge site: the reconstruction of the Manor cottages to look exactly as they did during the Second World War.
